Set in the heart of Shropshire 4 miles south of Shrewsbury, Cound trout fishery was founded in 1994 to cater for the fly fisherman. This old sand and gravel pit of 26 acres is fed by an underground spring with depths of up to 65 ft. The water is crystal clear all year round and produces some tremendous fishing; there are 13 boats with another 7 to follow and a mile of bank fishing with many staging and clear banks to fish from.
The lake is stocked every week to maintain its 6500 fish from 1 1/2 to 20 lb +, there are six different species of fish and to my knowledge there is no other fishery in the country that has the same to offer. Browns, Rainbows, Blues, Brookies, Tigers and (Arctic Char to be stocked on the 1st April 2008.) We have a large fish policy of 100 Double’s which is maintained by our own Trout Farm at Burwarton, which boasts some of the finest fish in the country.
The Lake is stuffed full of natural food including many Insects and a large population of Coarse Fish, which once spawned create millions of fry for the trout to feed on, hence many large over wintered fish. The lake record is 26lb 4oz. We have built a cage and have 2000 of the six species in it. We hope to get a record for Brookies, Tigers and Char. Browns, Rainbows and Blues we hope to get over 30Lbs+ and once we have it all up and running the cages should produce 1500 from 3Lbs to 11Lbs and 500 fish between 25Lbs to 30Lbs+ each season. Plus the normal stockings of 2Lber’s each week.
The Fishery is open all year except for Christmas Day. We open at 8.00am and close when it’s dark giving those Anglers who wish to fish the Evening rise chance to see it through. We boast some great sport, Boat, Bank or float tube, come and give it a go if you like Dry Fly and Buzzers Cound is the place
